Diarrhea in an infant due to lactose intolerance.

Resolved Question:

My sons dr took a stool sample on him because he has been having diarrhea for months now and they just decided to do something. They said all the tests cane back fine the only thing was they said there was white blood cells...didnt say how many or what kind of infection it would be. They ended up changing his formula and said to try that for a month because he could be lactose intolerant But they didnt say any more about the white blood cells....any suggestions?

Hi,

Lactose intolerance is a very common cause of diarrhea in an infant and by itself can raise the WBC count. It can also lead to mild infection of the intestine which will subside by itself on changing to a formula that is non lactose based.

Lactose intolerant means your body can't produce enough lactase, the enzyme needed to digest lactose, the primary sugar in cow's milk and other dairy products. As a result, the undigested lactose stays in the intestine and causes gastrointestinal problems. These problems tend to be uncomfortable but not dangerous.

I would recommend the following-

1)Always read labels before giving the baby any food. Avoid food that contains dairy and dairy product. Due to recent legislation, products containing milk ingredients (or other common allergens) must be clearly labeled as such.

2)Some babies who are lactose intolerant can digest small amounts of lactose, while others are very sensitive to the tiniest quantities. You'll probably learn through trial and error about it and adjust the diet accordingly.

3)make sure all of your baby's nutritional needs are being met. Nondairy sources of calcium include leafy greens, fortified juices and soy milk, tofus are important to improve the nutritional status of the baby.

4)Talk to the doctor regarding any other supplement that the baby might need for its growth and development.

Thank you.
