Bone cyst and fracture in child

Resolved question:
Boy broke arm and then diagnosed with major bone cyst. Local doctors recommend emergency surgery in 4 weeks. They will clean the cyst and pack with bone / marrow from germany.

Local doctor also said that the cyst has crossed the growth plate, so may permanently deform the child.

We would like a 2nd opinion

Hello,Welcome at Doctor Spring.

I have read your question with diligence.

By going through details of your query,it looks that your child is having fracture at his arm & he is also having bone cyst. The bone cyst does lea to weakness at the bone. The most probable reason for having fracture is ,presence of bone cyst.I am agree with opinion of your surgeon that it should be operated & graft should be filled during surgery. There are some chances of damage to epiphysis which can be minimized by taking care during surgery. There are some chances of having deformity but due to less age of child there are good chances of remodeling for that. Also in later age corrective surgery can be done to correct deformity if any problem occurs.

Hope this will help you.

Hi, Can you please review new X-ray and see comment on any improvements. Local Doctors are now commenting that surgery may not be needed because the Cyst is healing very well on its own.

Your advice on this would be greatly appreciated as the family would prefer to avoid surgery if possible.

Thanks

Glen

Hello Glen,
Can you also send me previous x ray (to compare the one with the cyst and the one that shows healing) for evaluation ?

Thank you

Hello,

Thank you. Sorry for the delay in reply.

The cyst does appear to be healing. So you can safely wait to see how it evolves, especially since you want to avoid the Surgery. There is no need for an urgent Surgery. Your Doctor will monitor the cyst periodically, Xray 4-6 months. Some activity limitation also recommended.

Hope this helps
