antibiotic needed for allergy

Resolved Question:

My 2 years & 8 Months old Daughter Woke up with a Insect Bite in the Side of her face,
She had an allegic reaction to the bite and her face started swelling (Especially her Eyelids)
which was increasing as the day went by..

The pharmacist prescribed Claritine (loratadine) 5ML for a few days (First dose 8ML)
and to consult the doctor if no improvement in 2 Hours,

There was no improvement so we decided to go to the clinic, When we sent her to the clinic the doctor Prescribed Primalan (mequitazine) and AntiBiotics (because of the swelling in the eyes)
the issue is its is know here that generally Doctors here in the UAE are known to be trigger happy when it comes to Antibiotics and always want to give you medicines from their pharmacy

A) it seems strange to me to give Antibiotics in case of allergies, Should she take it?
B) Any benefit from switching her from Claritine to Primalan? all the studies i read indicate that they are "more or less" the same (only loratadine maybe faster acting)

Hello,
Thank you for consult:

A – Antibiotics are generally not need in case of an allergic reaction. I assume that there is no pus collection, pus discharge, active wound or red eyes. If any of these symptoms are there then you might want to give her the antibiotics. If not then you can just skip the antibiotics and observe for the remission of symptoms.  If in doubt, you better follow the Doctors recommendation since he/she has clinically assessed the patient.

B – Claritine and Primalan, both have more or less similar actions and profile. So you may continue with Claritine itself. Please make sure she is getting adequate dosage.

Hope this helps. Thank you.

The Doctor did say she has congested ears and she is currently asleep now that she is asleep we noticed some puss collection at her tear Ducts. We did start her on "concentrated" Augmentin 3.5 ML twice a day..for 5 Days and the Antihistamine 5ML for 5 Days. Will wait and see how she is tomorrow..any suggestion on eye drops to sooth her Eyes?

Since she is already on antibiotics no eye drops are required. Especially since the primary problem is non ophthalmic, it is better not to instill anything externally to the eye. The oral antibiotics will take care of any possible infection.Congested ear (possible acute Otitis media)+ Possible pus collection + sensitive area (eyes); So antibiotics are right way ahead.

Wishing her a speedy recovery. Thank you.
