Abnormal EEG and sleep activity after BRAIN INJURY.

Resolved Question:

I had an EEG performed (5 months after the injury), and wanted to understand what it meant. It was done as a result of a severe brain injury. Also, note that I have strabismus (double vision) from injury and it has been nearly 2 years.

Interpretation:
" Abnormal EEG. There was mild bilateral (left more than right) temporal and fronto-temporal focal cerebral dysfunction. Correlation with imaging may be considered."

Background activity:
"Posterior dominant rhythm of 11Hz which is reactive and symmetrical with some beta activity anteriority. Also noted moderate amounts of left more than right temporal and fronto-temporal intermittent (mostly independent) theta activity."

Sleep Feature:
"Diffuse theta during drowsiness. Vertex waves, POSTS, and sleep spindles noted during sleep."

Hello.
Thank you for posting your query at DoctorSpring.com
I have seen the EEG report. This reports shows features suggestive of mild to moderate brain damage on both sides, left more than right. There are no features suggestive of epilepsy.
This finding can be confirmed with scans of brain such as MRI or PET scans.
There is no specific treatment for this, and partial improvement would occur over time.
Please note-The brain stem function can not be assessed with EEG.
I hope it helps.
Best wishes,

Thank you for your response. Is there any indication in this EEG report on the details of the brain damage? Basically it says more on the left, but any indication of more on brain damage.

Thank you for getting back.
Based on this EEG, we can say that the brain damage is mild to moderate in severity and not very severe. This is because in severe brain damage, we see delta waves (here only theta waves are mentioned in EEG report).
