I am a 21-year-old female. I have a few sores on my outer labia some of which appear to be flat and white and others that are small, red and raised. The top of my outer labia (right next to my clitoris) is slightly inflamed. I have no other symptoms. It does not burn when I urinate nor do I have flu-like symptoms. I am wondering if this is an ingrown hair (I shaved my outer labia a few days ago and experienced some irritation shortly after) or an STI.

Hi, It seems like you have a yeast infection. Yeast is a type of fungus; when one speaks of a yeast infection this is referring to the fungus scientifically known as Candida. The specific type of fungus most commonly responsible for vaginitis is Candida albicans. Yeast is commonly present on normal human skin and in areas of moisture, such as the mouth and vagina Vaginitis is inflammation of the vagina. Vaginitis is very common and is reported by as many as 75% of women at some point in their lives. Vaginitis can be caused by a number of infections as well as noninfectious causes such as trauma or chemical irritation. I would recommend the following- 1) Start treatment with anti-fungal like Ointment clotrimacole or Ointment flucanozole or ointment Nystatin. 2) Keep the genital region clean and use antiseptic solution to wash the perinea region after sexual intercourse. 3) Using barrier contraceptive can go a long way in protecting yourself from such sexually transmitted disease. 4) Sex partner doesn't also need to be treated for a yeast infection. If you have recurrent yeast infections, your doctor might recommend treating your partner if your partner has signs or symptoms of a genital yeast infection. 5) Eat a good balanced diet with good portion of proteins carbohydrates and vitamins. Consume diet rich in green leafy vegetables and milk. Thank you.
