Hello, with reference to your query regarding hurting your left eyelid, eyelid problems are common but not that serious. It is also associated with other associated features like visual changes, pain or tenderness, watery discharge or gritty eyelids, itchy or flaky eyes, swelling in the eyelid, lumps on the eyelid, droopy upper eyelid, rolling outwards of the lower eyelid or rolling inwards of the eyelids, yellow plaques on the eyelids or excessive blinking and so on. If it is a swollen eyelid, then you think of meibomian cyst (chalazian). These takes weeks to develop, if infected they become red and painful. Sometimes they disappear on their own, but if they become large and don't go away, it should be drained under local anesthesia by your G.P and ask you to take antibiotics and eye drops as well. Sometimes, even shingles on the face and eye presents with a rash and if not treated, leads to loss of vision. Other condition you should think of is Blepharitis, which is normally worse in the morning or at the end of the day with a gritty burning eye. Another possible cause could be contact dermatitis, if you are allergic to something or eye shadow or touching your eyes with nail polish. Sometimes you may see lumps on the eyelid (Basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma or a melanoma) or even conjunctivitis or may be ectopian or utopian or yellow plaques on the upper or lower eyelids known as Xanthelasma, which are harmless but suggest you that your cholesterol level may be high which in turn leads to heart attack and stroke. Hence if you have any problems regarding the eye, get in touch with your G.P. and if necessary he may refer you to an ophthalmologist for the needful.
