Thanks for your question and concern. Newborn babies, born to herpes patients are at a high risk of getting infected with the virus. Utmost care should be taken to prevent the spread of virus to the young one. But it is not necessary to worry much about it. Time of delivery is the worst prone time to transmit the virus from mother to baby in the case of genital herpes. It can fatally affect the life of baby in some conditions. If the mother got infected long time before pregnancy and do not have active outbreak during the time of delivery, chances of infecting the baby is low. If the mother has active infection, chances of infecting the baby also increase. In cases in which a mother has got herpes outbreak during delivery, the child will be taken out through C-section or Caesarean to avoid getting active lesions coming in contact with the tender body of new born infant. In cases in which a mother is getting infected while she is pregnant, the newborn baby may also get the infection. This is because the mother’s body is not prepared with antibodies to prevent outbreaks of herpes virus. In older infections, mother’s body will have sufficient antibodies which will prevent spread of the virus to baby. It is better to consult your doctor with your medical records so that he can help you better. Hope my answer helps. Take care.
