Resolved question:
Doctor,
I had a sleeve gastrectomy for being obese. Now I suffer from acid reflux. I would like to know what long term treatment can help me control this. I have been taking omeprazole but worry about long-term effects of this drug. Can I take this drug every day for the rest of my life?
I have changed my lifestyle, now I don't drink alcohol and coffee and it has helped. I wish I could have a cup of coffee with friends sometimes.
Best regards,
Henry

Hello,
Thank you for posting your query at DoctorSpring.
I am Dr.R.K and I am pleased to assist you.
Omeprazole is a safe medication. It does not cause any serious side effects in young individuals like you.
You can take omeprazole for 8 weeks. Along with omeprazole the following should be done.
1. Avoid coffee, citrus, tomatoes, fatty food, carbonated beverages, mint, onion
2. Avoiding eating full stomach and eating smaller frequent meals ( which you must be doing after your sleeve gastrectomy)
3. Going to bed at least 2-3 hours after food
4. Avoiding alcohol and smoking.
If stopping omeprazole results in return of symptoms, you can continue taking omeprazole. Many of my patients are taking Omeprazole for years without any issues. You should not worry about it.
I hope that answers your question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr.R.K
