Resolved question:
Hello. My 10 year old brother is suffering from sour throat from over 3 weeks. I had given him mox 250 antibiotic for 5 days in last week and again it repeated, so again I gave mox 250 for 5 more days. Day before yesterday only after giving mox 250 for 5 days(2 times a day), I left giving it to him. He was perfectly fine but today he is again feeling sour throat. What's the matter? Please help me.

Hello,
Thank you for asking your query at DoctorSpring.
Sore throat is a symptom (just like fever or pain). Simply put it means irritation and/or pain of throat. There are number causes for sore throat. Most common being an acute pharyngitis caused by bacteria or virus. The Mox antibiotic will help in treating the acute pharyngitis caused by a bacteria (but not the virus ). Some amount of throat irritation and soreness can remain even if the bacteria is eradicated. I assume that could be the possible reason for persisting sore throat for your brother.
I assume that he does not have any fever, sever pain while swallowing, or discharge from throat. (Please let me know if that is not the case).
For the time being you can give it some time to resolve by its own. Since he had a course of antibiotic only supportive measures are needed now.
1. Drink fluids. Drink plenty of water to keep the throat moist and prevent dehydration. Use mild warm water or liquids
2. Gargle saltwater. A saltwater gargle of 1 teaspoon of table salt to 8 ounces (237 milliliters) of warm water can help soothe a sore throat. Gargle the solution and then spit it out
3. If you use Air-conditioning use a setting which humidifies the air.
4. An OTC Anti allergy medication (like Allegra 30mg) once daily to treat any possible allergy component. (For 5 days)
With the above measures the sore throat should resolve in 3-4 days. In case if there is persistent sore throat or any new symptoms you may have to visit your Doctor.
Hope this helps
Please feel free to ask followup question.
Sir, whenever I give him mox he feels better and he is also having allergic asthma due to snowphilia. As soon as 5 day cycle of mox is complete he feels okay on 6th day but on seventh day he starts feeling sour throat again. In this case seroflo 250 inhaler makes him feel comfortable but the problem of sour throat is just suppressed and never eradicated even after taking those steps indicated by you. He sleeps under humid conditions and gargles twice daily. Is he suffering from any serious disease?
Hello,
No this is anything serious. But you should not use antibiotics often, because it can build up temporary resistance. There might be symptoms resolution while using antibiotics. This is can be due to the suppression of the normal bacterial flora in the mouth and throat. Another possibility is a resistance bacterium. A throat swab and culture needs to done to find out whether there is bacterial infection persisting. This is important to find out the type of bacteria and to know which antibiotics are sensitive.
So the first step in the approach of eradication of the sore throat is to find out, which bacteria is causing it. Please discuss this option with your Doctor. Meanwhile continue the general measures. Do not use Mox unless recommended by your Doctor.
Hope this helps
