QUADRICEPS MUSCLE numbness on laying flat. Cause.

Resolved question:
My left quadriceps muscle, mainly lateral portion from hip to knee becomes numb when I lay flat. I wake up with pins and needles and have been sleeping on my side because of it for the past approximately 2 years. I have been out of the country completing vet school so I havnt been able to get to a doctor for it.

Well I would like to ask for some additional information:
1) Have you ever experienced this pain while you are awake or while walking?
2) Have you been involved in excessive exercise or had any trauma to the left leg?
3) Is your diet vegetarian or non-vegetarian?
4) Are there any additional symptoms? Do you have pins and needles sensation at your finger tips or toes?
Also in your reply, kindly include your age and whether you have any significant family history.

Thanks for the quick reply! I only experience the numbness about 30s-1min after laying completely flat. It begins with what I believe to be the feeling of nerve impulses throughout my quadriceps muscle that leads to complete numbness from my hip to left knee. I am a 28 year old caucasian female with no major clinical history of disease. I came to Grenada W.I. for vet school 3 years ago in good athletic shape and was not experiencing this issue. I was running and doing hot yoga on a regular basis. Vet school started and I gained weight in a short period of time which I have been trying to get off since first term. I admit I fluctuate in weight and get on "health kicks" where I train pretty hard in running on the treadmill and yoga in my apartment then give up. I feel like my left hip might be involved because it just feels tighter compared to the right. Im not a vegetarian. No pins and needles in finger tips or toes; just lef quad. I dont know if related but maybe worth mentioning, I have an english bulldog that was sleeping between my legs every night for about 5 years or so.

Hello,
There seems to be a nerve entrapment or compression of the nerve. Mostly the lateral cutaneous nerve of the thigh can get trapped or compressed, and such isolated episodes of numbness can occur.
The only way to confirm it is nerve conduction study.
But the good thing is such compression or entrapment resolves on its own, if the aggravating factors are controlled, such as obesity, high intensity physical training, e.t.c
If it has persisted beyond three months, it is prudent to get a nerve conduction study done.
Meanwhile you can take Tab. Neurobion Forte once a day at bed time for a month.
Regards.

Thank you!!!!! Could I get this medication without a prescription in Grenada, West Indies?

Hello,
Yes the medicine i prescribed is a combination of vitamin b complex and b 12 which is supposed to stimulate nerve repair and new nerve formation.
If neurobion is not available, any vitamin b complex capsule/ tablet can be picked up which is available locally.
Regards.
