I am a 27 year old obese female and I have had pitting edema in my shins and ankles for aboit two years. I have brought this up to my doctor on a few occasions, but she does not seem worried, saying that I likely eat too much salt and have poor veins. My mother also has this problem and she is in her 60s.
Another relative though, told me that this means that I have congestive heart failure.
This doesn't sound right to me as I hike and walk everywhere with out getting short of breath or anything.
Still, she kind of freaked me out. Is whAt she is saying true?

Hello,
Thank you for your query at DoctorSpring.com
I understand your concern.
Yes pitting edema should be investigated further, but considering your age, CHF seems unlikely.
I would request you to get CBC, LFT, RFT, Serum Elecetrolytes and just to be on the safer side an ECG.
Feel free to discuss further,
Regards.
My doctor has done cbc, lft and rbc all of which came back normal. She did a cbp as well, also normal. They also did an ekg, which was also fine as is my blood pressure, blood oxygen level and cholesterol.
If my heart is fine, then what it causing the edema?
If all the reports are fine, then it could be because of varicose veins.
I would advise you a doppler of the lower limbs for a correct diagnosis, and share the reports with me.
There is no question of CHF, with all reports normal.
