Hello Doctor,
I am an unmarried female, age 25. I have more than one sexual partner. I am occasionally involved in unprotected sex as well. I got to know about HIV AIDS. I fear catching the same cause of unprotected sexual practice. How do I know do I have the disease?

Thank You for your question. HIV can be transmitted through unprotected sex and AIDS is a sexually transmitted diseases. Practice of unprotected sex does make a risk of catching HIV. HIV can be tested primarily within three to twelve week of initial infection through an antibiotic test. It is done by detecting the HIV-RNA. The positive result of this test, can than later be confirmed by PCR test. You are advised to observe the initial symptoms of HIV; if the symptoms appear then you can go for the test. The symptoms for AIDS involve lower immunity, loss of appetite, loss of body weight, sweating at night etc. For the protective part, do use protection like condoms for avoiding transmission infection. In case of any doubt consult a physician or a sexologist for proper examination , diagnosis and treatment for the same.
