I have been getting herpes simplex on my right face cheek since I was a child. When I was younger It would come about once a year and in recent years (i am now 22) it has been coming a few times a year and this year has been by far the worst. My doctor has tried valtrex pills and zovarak cream but its not working. What should i do?

Although it is rare to have as many recurrences as you have it is not unheard of. Herpes is notorious for its recurrences and it may occur many times a year. Although you have taken the standard medication for herpes that is Valtrex (acyclovir), there are new medications developed for acyclovir resistant herpes. My recommendation would be- 1) Discuss with your family doctor regarding the usage of Inj foscarnet (Foscavir).Although very effective against acyclovir-resistant herpes it has many side effects and needs to be monitored. 2) If you are taking any type of steroid medication for any other ailment like asthma, acne, arthritis, it needs to be stopped to prevent future recurrences. 3) The main reason for recurrences is having a weak immune system. Having a healthy diet goes a long way to improve the immune system. Diet should consist of green vegetables and citrus fruits. Having a regular exercise regimen also helps. 4) Take a regular dosage of Vitamin B complex tablets once a day that is available over-the-counter. If these measures do not help you and if you continue to have recurrences consult a hematologist for the possibility of congenital immune deficiency. Thank you.
