Thank you for using Ask a Doctor service from Doctor spring.

Increase your fluid intake to the point where your urine volume reaches 2.5 litres a day. This may mean drinking up to 3 litres a day, if you live in a hot, dry climate or if you are involved in strenuous physical activity. Increasing urine volume decreases the concentration of minerals in the urine. This makes it less likely that a stone will form.

Vegetables like cucumber, tomatoes, spinach and radishes should be avoided. Strong smelling vegetables like asparagus and onion are also avoidable as they can cause problems with the urinary system. If the stones are detected to be calcium phosphate stones then one might need to moderate the intake of milk and vitamin D if there is no other diagnosed cause for excess calcium being present in the blood. Certain drinks also need to be avoided when following a kidney stones diet. Alcoholic drinks tend to irritate the kidneys as do drinks that contain carbonated water like colas and other canned beverages.

Avoid High-oxalate foods include black tea, soy products, nuts, whole wheat bread, berries, kiwi, carrots, celery, eggplant, kale, leeks, sweet potatoes, spinach, black pepper and chocolate. Limit your intake of medium-oxalate foods, which contain 2 to 10 mg of oxalate per serving, to 2 to 3 servings per day. Medium-oxalate foods include orange juice, cranberry juice, yogurt, pears, peaches, liver, sardines, brown rice, oatmeal, white bread, broccoli, corn, lettuce, onions and tomatoes.

With any type of kidney stones, you should drink plenty of water throughout the day. Water can help promote urination, flushing out the body and increasing your chances of naturally removing kidney stones. MayoClinic.com recommends drinking 8 to 12 cups of water every day.

Hope this helps. feel free to ask if you have any further questions.

Thank you
